2020 Valentines Day Massacre Regatta

Harbor 20 Fleet

Our boat was the race committee boat once again for the 2020 Valentines Day Massacre Regatta match races of the local Harbor 20 fleet, a great opportunity to get some pics of these attractive little boats. I brought my DJI Phantom 4 Advanced drone but it was a bit windy and I didn't work up the nerve to fly it until the fourth race, when the wind had died down just a bit.

The races were pretty close but it was surprisingly hard to get all ten boats in one shot. The one at right is the best one that shows everyone.

Harbor 20 Start

I also got some closer shots with my iPhone when the boats were starting and rounding the leeward mark next to our boat. The picture at left was taken just after a race started.

Harbor 20s Upwind Mark

I flew the drone out to the upwind mark about 7/10 of a mile from our boat to get some mark rounding pics and video. Here are the lead boats approaching the mark.

Harbor 20s Head Downwind

Most of the fleet has rounded the upwind mark and they are heading back downwind but there's one straggler on the left still working its way to the mark.

Harbor 20's Head Upwind

Back at sea level, a shot of the fleet just after a start as they headed up the course.

Harbor 20s Leeward Mark

This one shows a few boats that have rounded the leeward mark while others in the background are still approaching it.

Beautiful Sailing Day!

It was a great day for sailing! The Chamber of Commerce could not have ordered up better weather!

Harbor 20 Sailing

One more drone shot of the Harbor 20 fleet as they sail downwind.

This two minute video shows the fleet rounding both the windward and leeward marks.

About Tom

Starting with the little two-person inflatable raft I had as my very first boat, I have always loved the freedom and the feeling of being out on the water. With my father's help, I added a hard plywood floor to that little inflatable, and that was the beginning of a long chain of boats I have owned, loved, maintained, modified, fixed, enjoyed, and scared myself to death on over the past few decades.
